Sometimes, procrastination pays

What have you been putting off doing? Why?

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

~ Steven Wright

I rarely put things off. If I do, it’s because I need more money, or I am not definitively sure how I’m going to tackle said issue.

As an example, I’m looking at some home improvements. I have a nice sun porch that I would love to turn into a four seasons room. That’s going to take some serious cash. I have a HELOC at my disposal, but I don’t want to drain it. Plus, we are saving our loot for a trip to Australia next year. We’ll start in on it once the trip is over and paid off.

Now, an issue that I’m putting off due to indecisiveness actually has to do with this blog. I want to come up with some kind of cohesive plan to give it a more distinct identity. Once I do, the plan is to take the plunge and go premium.

So many decisions! Do I want to focus on writing techniques, like my chapter summaries of Ray Bradbury’s Zen in the Art of Writing? I’ve done the first two chapters.  Chapter three is in the works. I’m struggling to keep it at a regular schedule.

Do I want to take a turn to philosophy and Eastern religion? It’s one of my favorite subjects. Where I don’t have the knowledge,Β my hubs can fill in the blanks. He’s huge on Dogen, Neitzche, Spinoza, Hume, and the like.

How about just doing these daily prompts and the numerous challenges found all over WordPress land? That can keep you busy forever!

Do I have to make a decision at all? The content strategist in me (what I do at my full-time job) tells me I should. I’ll also confess that getting new subscribers pushes my dopamine button, and it seems that the most cohesive blogs have the most subscribers.

The chill side of me, however, says, “Relax, write about whatever you want.” I feel that may still be the path to travel for now. I’m not trying to earn a living on it, but it might be a nice supplement for when I retire. It’s still a few years away, but looming. I really enjoy the connections I have made with fellow bloggers, and I’m stretching myself creatively; delving into areas I never thought i would tackle.

Now that I’ve made a decision,Β  I guess it’s not something I’m putting off anymore πŸ˜‚.

If you choose not to decide,Β  you still have made a choice.

I feel that!! Inaction is still a choice.

And yes, write what you want 😊

It seems to be the best choice at this point πŸ˜‰ I feel like something will eventually coalesce of its own accord.

It seems like all the great writers just tell us to write. We can always go back and edit or change, but that initial momentum gets the wheels turning is πŸ™‚ good luck

For sure! Ray Bradbury said he wrote at least 1000 words a day from the time he was 12. And that was old school, with a manual typewriter!!!

Love the quote! I feel you on what type of content you want to put out. It’s a difficult decision for me as well. Right now, I feel like my site is a hodgepodge of all kinds of things. Good luck on whatever you do. πŸ™‚

Good stuff, I think a lot of us struggle with our sweet spot.

Love the Rush quote. In college, I had a parakeet, he’d usually stick his head under a wing around 8:00 pm. That is, unless I put on Xanadu. The first min or two with all the bird chirping would instantly wake him up… no idea what they were saying in bird-speak, but he’d run back and forth on his perch, ring his bell and peck his mirror in excitement. He was a great little thing 😎

Cool! Yep, as a bassist, huge Geddy Lee fan. I remember working on Xanadu when I was in high school. I still haven’t learned the whole thing 😜 I’ll have to play it for Melody. That’s our African Grey parrot. I love parakeets. They are cute and a LOT quieter than parrots. πŸ˜‚
