Stay curious!

What does it mean to be a kid at heart?

Going back to my own childhood, I remember life being simple. There was mom and dad. They took care of everything.  There were my older siblings, who were equal parts terror, and confidante.

I wasn’t responsible for much, so it was easy to accomplish everything I needed to get done. This freed me up to explore. I lived at the edge of a big forest that stretched several miles. My favorite thing was wandering the woods collecting different ferns and mosses. My mom always thought I would be a botanist.

This was my life, being curious, learning new things, amazed when I learned how something worked, and laughing hysterically at fart jokes.

When did life get complicated?

I still love walking the woods. I don’t have time to collect specimens and look them up, though. It’s easier now with the internet, but I don’t.  I have things to do, a house to run, bills to pay.

I still love learning new things. Take this blog as an example.  I just started it a few months ago, and I’m learning to love and write poetry. When I come up with a cool phrase, I feel the same excitement. It reminds me of the thrill I had as a kid, discovering a new mushroom and identifying it as a lycoperdon perlatum.

I still love a good fart joke.

Despite growing up, I guess I’m doing OK.  😉

It’s funny, but I really started getting curious and making an effort to learn things once I was well into adulthood. I think because I wanted to rather than had to.
I was a lazy bastard kid.

LOL! I was too in many ways. I hated school. I also never really thought I was “learning” anything when I was tromping through the woods as a kid. I was just doing what I thought was fun.
