What is your favorite place to go in your city?
I’ve mentioned to hubs on a few occasions that downtown Farmington is like being on a movie set. It’s the quintessential small Midwestern town.
They have a wonderful Farmers Market every Saturday from May through November. In addition to ultra-fresh produce, there’s local products like jams, honey, and bakery items. There’s even a fish vendor that brings down whitefish from the UP. Their smoked whitefish dip is to die for, and the walleye is superb. It’s not uncommon to strike up a conversation with random people, even for me and hubs who are fairly introverted.
On Halloween, many of the historic homes are decorated. Jack-o-lanterns grin from the porches and children run and playfully shriek up and down the sidewalks. The city also has the Raven festival. Through the month of October, you can find large ravens sponsored by many of the local businesses scattered through the downtown area.
What I find most enjoyable are the Friday night concerts at the Riley Park pavilion. Every Friday is a different musical group, ranging from Motown to classic rock. My favorite band is The Major Dudes, a Steely Dan tribute band. Farmington also has something that they call “The Syndicate.” You can buy adult beverages at one of a dozen local bars and walk around downtown, usually just to hang and enjoy the concert.
I feel like I hit the jackpot living where I am now. I grew up in the sticks. If you wanted to do anything, you had to drive to get there. Now, downtown is a nice fifteen minute walk. With all the nice little shops, restaurants, and events, it’s like being on vacation without leaving home. 😉
