Tenacity

An orange cone flower topped with a cap of snow.

Beneath dying frost

Dogged push for life unfolds

The last bloom of fall

Note: This is one of my cone flower plants by my front door. For whatever reason, they didn’t do very well this year. Last year, then bloomed like crazy. This year, not so much. Many of the blooms had raggedy petals. Some didn’t grow petals at all.

A week ago, everything else was brown and dead. Birds were picking away at the last of the seedy center. This one plant burst forth with a final bloom. The last gasp of summer.

This morning marks our first snowfall of southeast Michigan. The flower still looks good, but shivering under a cap of snow. I had to run out to take a picture. I felt that this little plant deserved a haiku.

We can all learn from it – tenacity in the face of adversity.
