TankaTuesday challenge #18 – a fruitful senryu

Appeel to many

Summer’s ice cream companion

Happy sunshine smile

Squishy velvet trap

Prime window passing quickly

Time for the freezer

This is my submission for the #TankaTuesday challenge #18. I can pick any syllabic style, so I decided to go with a senryu, because they can be a little humorous. The task is to write it about my favorite or most hated fruit.

Hopefully,  you picked up on the fact that I am referring to the banana. My misspelling of “appeal” is intentional. 😉  I have a love-hate relationship with them. I like the taste, I can’t stand the texture.  I have a weird thing about food textures. Mushy or slippery foods make me gag. So foods like Jello or okra or that Chai pudding crap?  Oh, hell no! I also don’t like pulpy orange juice. There’s something about the way solid things hit my tongue, but it’s supposed to be a liquid… It just doesn’t seem right. I know, I’m a weirdo. 😜

I can only tolerate the banana when it’s no longer in its banana form. My mom’s homemade banana bread? Yum! Frozen and blended into a smoothie – perfectly acceptable.  A banana fresh out of the fruit bowl? No way. I have tried, I just can’t do it.

Bananaman as featured in a Japanese Dole commercial.  He mocks my dilemma.

I don’t know how old you are- but I am in my 60’s and I can tell you- bananas used to taste much more banana-y than they do now- at least the ones we get here in Alaska where certainly there is no option to grow our own. Similarly with Tomatoes- although come mid July I will be able to get locally grown for a few weeks, and oh they are sooooo delish!

I’m pretty darn close 😉. I can’t say much about how bananas used to taste. I never ate them at all as a kid. I’d get weird looks when ordering a banana split without the banana. 😂 But I hear you on tomatoes. OMG, we’d get these awesome beefsteak tomatoes at the local produce stand back in the day. They were bright red, and the flavor would knock your socks off. The ones now are more of a medium pink/green, mealy, and all the flavor of a styrafoam cup. We have a farmers market in the town square on Saturdays during the summer. It’s the only place we can get good produce.
