The good sleep

A black and white photograph of an empty, harvested autumn field with a large arborvitae tree standing solitary in the background under a moody sky.

harvest done, the fields empty save the lone scarecrow sighing

nothing to do but let the roots grow deep into the earth

rest well tree, knowing the warm winds return to bring you new life

Here’s a submission for #TankaTuesday.

The challenge this week is to write a Sijo about beginnings and endings. A Sijo is a traditional three-line Korean poetic form that centers on a thematic progression of an idea, a development, and a surprising twist. It can be three or six lines, but it has to have a 44 to 46 syllabic count.

Well, beginnings and endings have been my life for these last two weeks.

Last Thursday, I got a meeting invitation from my manager’s boss for the next day. I had a bad feeling about it. Why?

  • He has never had a direct meeting with me before
  • We were in the midst of another corporate restructuring
  • Everyone gets sacked on a Friday

And yep – I was right. He pops on with a lady I had never seen before. He introduces her as Ms. So-n-so from HR. I didn’t really have to listen to the rest. I said ok and nodded my head at the appropriate times. The call was over in about six minutes.

I was so flipping mad at first, I could barely speak. But once the sting wore off after a couple of days, I started looking at job postings. I started to realize that I didn’t really like what I was doing anyways. I went from being a digital marketing writer/editor to leading a team of digital marketing writer/editors. I hardly ever wrote any more. I missed it. It’s probably why I started this blog a few years ago. I needed an outlet.

So I’ve been applying to jobs where I actually get to write again. I’m actually pretty happy about the prospect of being in a job that takes some creativity. It’s what I did most of my life, and I took that detour about three years ago for a “promotion.” I feel like I’m back on track, and ready to get back to doing what I love.
